: What's the difference between engineered flooring and laminate flooring?
: Engineered flooring is constructed in layers similar to plywood with an actual finished hardwood veneer layer on the surface. Laminate flooring is a photographed image of finished hardwood applied on a HDF laminate together with an abrasion resistance layer.
: HOW DO I CLEAN MY WOOD FLOORS?
: If the finish manufacturer is known, follow the manufacturers recommended cleaning procedures. However, if the manufacturer is not known, please following the procedures below:
For surface finishes, including urethanes:
- Keep grit off the floor, dust mop or vacuum regularly and keep doormats clean. Wipe up spills promptly with a dry cloth. Use a slightly dampened cloth for sticky spills.
- Do NOT wax a urethane finished floor. Waxing a urethane finished floor will cause the wood floor to be slippery, requiring continuous waxing as your maintenance, and any re-surfacing will require a full sanding process.
- For general cleaning, use a generic hardwood floor cleaner. If the luster does not return to traffic areas, the floor may require recoating.
- Acrylic impregnated floors require a spray and buff system as recommended by the manufacturer.
For waxed floors:
- Keep grit off the floor, dust mop or vacuum regularly and keep doormats clean. Wipe up spills promptly with a dry cloth or dry paper towel, use a slightly dampened cloth for sticky spills and buff with a dry cloth to restore luster. When the floor looks dull, buff first to see if luster can be restored before waxing. When areas of heavy use no longer respond to buffing, wax only those areas and buff the entire floor to an even luster.
- When the whole floor needs attention, clean the floor with a solvent based wood floor cleaner and then wax. Your floor should only need to be completely rewaxed once or twice a year depending on traffic.
- Cleaning a waxed floor with water will leave white water marks.

: Can I install flooring the day it arrives?
: Whether you are repairing an existing floor or laying a new one, it is critical to have the flooring materials at the same moisture level as the room before they are installed. This means leaving the materials stacked with spacers in the room they will occupy for as long as possible¡ªtwo weeks at a minimum. Without this time, there is a real chance the flooring will dry out and shrink after it is installed, resulting in unsightly gaps between boards, or pick up moisture and expand, creating the potential for buckling. Though manufactured flooring is shipped kiln-dried to an industry standard, this does not mean it cannot pick up additional moisture later. Storage in an unheated garage or installation in the same building with fresh plasterwork or poured concrete that is still drying can have a drastic effect.
: What are today's most popular flooring trends?
: Wood, laminate, ceramic tile and even natural stone are becoming more popular each year. Many of today's custom homes have little or no carpet on the main level. In the popular open floor plans, it's common to see the kitchen, dining area and great room all using the same floor covering, and that will be wood, laminate or ceramic. |
